3/12/08 Sonia Allen found a rare fungus on the trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture park on 15/11/08.

Below is the reply she got to confirm its identification.

From: Geoffrey Kibby (British Mycological Society and Editor of Field Mycology)

Dear Sonia,

Congratulations! It is indeed Strobilomyces strobilaceus, the Old Man of the Woods. A nationally rare species although in some areas it may be locally frequent. I am not sure about Yorkshire but I suspect there aren't too many records from there, I will try and check for you when I next go into Kew. A really good find, this is a species I rarely ever find (it doesn't grow in any of my home patches unfortunately).

 Best wishes,

Geoffrey
